The Rise of Female Founders in Consumer Brands

The Rise of Female Founders in Consumer Brands

Across Europe, more women are founding businesses than ever before, and the consumer sector is where much of this progress is taking shape.

Recent data from LinkedIn shows that while a funding gap between male and female founders still exists, the proportion of women starting companies is steadily increasing. Among Europe’s larger economies, Italy leads with women accounting for 32% of founders, followed by the United Kingdom at 31%, Spain at 30%, and France at 29%. Germany trails slightly behind at 23%.

While the numbers still highlight a gender imbalance in entrepreneurship, the trajectory is encouraging — and nowhere is this shift more visible than in consumer brands.

Why consumer businesses attract female founders

Consumer brands are often built around understanding people, their habits, needs, lifestyles and values. Many female founders have built successful companies by identifying gaps in markets that have historically been overlooked, particularly across wellness, fashion, beauty and lifestyle products.

The consumer sector also allows founders to build brands with a strong sense of purpose and community. In recent years this has led to the rise of a new generation of female-led companies that combine product innovation with storytelling, digital engagement and loyal customer bases.

Female founders behind notable consumer brands

Several well-known consumer brands founded by women illustrate how this shift is playing out in the market.

Ancient + Brave was founded by Kate Prince, who built the brand around modern wellness and nutrition. The company has become a prominent name in the fast-growing collagen and supplements category, particularly within premium retail and wellness communities.

Another standout example is TALA, founded by Grace Beverley. The brand has grown rapidly by combining sustainable activewear with a strong digital-first community, demonstrating how modern consumer brands can scale quickly through online engagement and brand identity.

In the beauty space, Charlotte Tilbury Beauty was founded by makeup artist Charlotte Tilbury. The brand has become a global success story, showing how founder expertise combined with strong branding can translate into significant commercial growth.

Another prominent example in the UK consumer landscape is Bumble and Bumble co-founded by Michael Gordon and later led creatively by women who helped shape the brand’s identity within the beauty industry. These brands highlight how female founders are building businesses that resonate strongly with modern consumers.

The funding gap still shaping the landscape

Despite the increasing number of women starting consumer businesses, access to capital remains a challenge. Across Europe, female-founded startups still receive a significantly smaller share of venture funding compared with male-founded companies. This can slow the pace at which brands scale, particularly in sectors such as consumer goods where marketing investment, supply chains and retail expansion require significant capital.

However, investor awareness is growing, and many funds are increasingly focused on supporting female founders, particularly in high-growth consumer sectors such as wellness, sustainable fashion and beauty.

A changing face of consumer entrepreneurship

What is clear is that the consumer sector continues to be one of the most accessible and dynamic spaces for new founders. Brands can launch digitally, build communities through social media and scale through direct-to-consumer models before expanding into retail. These shifts have lowered some of the traditional barriers to entry and allowed more founders, including women, to bring new ideas to market.

While the entrepreneurial landscape across Europe is still evolving, the rise of female-led consumer brands suggests a broader shift taking place. The next generation of consumer businesses, from wellness and beauty to fashion and lifestyle is increasingly being shaped by female founders bringing new perspectives, products and brand stories to the market.
